Agencies
National
Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) manages
a significant portfolio of research
projects and issues numerous Requests
for Proposals each year. NCCAM publishes an online newsletter
that offers periodic updates of their projects
and publications. The consumer health section provides helpful
medical information online.
Office of Dietary
Supplements (ODS) was created by Congress under the provisions
of the 1994 DSHEA legislation. It is charged with providing detailed
information to consumers and medical professionals regarding the
safe use of products classed by the FDA as dietary supplements.
The Office maintains IBIDS,
a database of journal literature focusing on supplements.
The National Cancer Institute maintains an Office
of Cancer
and Complementary and Alternative Medicine which supports some
research funding. It also provides peer-reviewed fact sheets on
treatments traditional described as CAM.
The NIH provides the CRISP
database of government-sponsored research. It is a very useful tool
to locate information on research for specific products or therapies,
or by specific institutions or investigators. Using broad search
terms such as “alternative” or “complementary”
will return generalized list of all research in the field. A similar
database with more specific information about recruitment is provided
by the National
Library of Medicine.
Office for Human
Research Protection (OHRP) is charged with oversight of all
research using human subjects in the United States. For any one
contemplating doing research with patients, this is an absolute
first read.
Proposal for Collaboration
The Osher Research Center receives many inquiries from scientists,
clinicians and investigators outside of Harvard University who are interested
in sponsoring or collaborating on a study of a product or a therapy. We are
always happy to review proposals and consider their merits, especially if they
are consonant with the Research Center’s own strategic plan. To ensure
fairness and an efficient response to your request, we ask that you submit your
proposal using this application form.
Academic Programs in Research Training
Scientists and clinicians who are interested in becoming
Principal Investigators for sponsored research typically complete
a Masters in Public Health in addition to an advanced degree in
their specialty. However, in lieu of an MPH degree, there are a
growing number of training programs where you can receive the training
usually required of an Investigator.
